What are crowns and bridges?

A dental crown, or cap, is a treatment used to restore a tooth with a defect too excessive to receive a successful dental filling. The defective portion of the tooth is removed and restored with a build-up material and then reduced in size to receive the crown.

A dental bridge is simply a fixed dental prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth that is comprised of multiply crowns connected containing one or more replacement teeth crowns that rest on the gum tissue in the area of the missing tooth/teeth. A dental bridge is permanently cemented and is non-removable by the patient.

Both dental crowns and bridges are multi-appointment procedures requiring assistance from a dental lab that custom fabricates the restorations.

  • Patient homecare
  • Dentist preparation
  • Lab preparation
  • Periodontal (gum) health
  • Smoking
  • Some medical conditions
