A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed in the jaw bone to serve as a replacement for a tooth, to suppport a bridge that replaces a missing tooth, or to anchor in a denture.
A dental implant is a possible option to replace a tooth that was already missing or lost due for some reason like decay, periodontal disease, an accident, etc.
A dental implant is usually composed of three seperate pieces:
1. the actually titanium implat (colored in dull grey in above photo), which is placed in the jaw bone, then covered back over with gum tissue to heal for approximently 3 months.
THREE MONTHS LATER:
2. the abutment (colored in shiny silver in above photo)
3. the tooth crown (colored white like an acutal tooth in above photo)
Steps 2 and 3 are done at the same visit, which does not usually require numbing, but simply the fitting of the components together onto the implant.
